A Lexington man has been charged in the shooting death of a Gilbert woman in Lexington on Thursday.
Sean Eric Malahy, 49, of Lexington, has been charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to Lexington Police Chief Terrence Green.
At approximately 5:40 pm, officers were dispatched to the 700 block of West Main Street and found a 72-year-old Gilbert woman with a gunshot wound to the face. Police began rendering aid until Lexington County EMS arrived.
Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said Judy Dyanne Burnett, 72, of Gilbert, was pronounced dead upon arrival at an area hospital from a gunshot wound to the face.
Officers found Malahy at the scene with a handgun.
A witness at the scene stated that the shooting had occurred during an argument behind the businesses near the former Kmart and near a fence and wood line of the Town Square shopping center.
Judy Burnett had gotten into an argument about feeding feral cats with the witness who was with Malahy. Malahy engaged in the argument with Burnett which turned into a physical fight. During this altercation, Malahy shot Burnett, according to Green.
The investigation found that Burnett and Malahy had known each other for a number of years and had ongoing disagreements about feral cat feeding, trapping and releasing in the area.
Malahy is being held at the Lexington County Detention Center.
