White supremacist Dylan Roof’s lawyers want 3 federal judges to spare his life.
The 27-year-old White Knoll High dropout is on federal death row for killing 9 members of a Black Charleston congregation.
His lawyers ask his conviction and death sentence be overturned.
They say mental illness should not have let him serve as his own attorney.
US District Judge Richard Gergel held competency hearings for Roof before his trial and again before its sentencing phase.
His lawyers say Roof offered no defense as he “suffered a delusional belief he would be rescued by the victors of a race-war.”
Arguments were to be Tuesday before the 4th US Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, VA.
When a decision will be made is not yet known.
In 2017, Roof became the 1st in US history to be sentenced to death for a federal hate crime.
Authorities say Roof, 22 at the time, opened fire during prayer of a 2015 Bible study at Charleston’s Emanuel AME Church.
