The 20th Annual Millrace Massacre and Iceman Championships will be this Saturday.

The event is held the 1st Saturday of the year on the Lower Saluda above Riverbanks Zoo where parking is available.

Do not park in the zoo parking lot.

The kayak race is an all-out assault on the water, pitting friends and comrades against each other to reach the finish line.

The clincher comes with about 100 yards left in the race, after the rapids, when the competitors must ditch their boats and take the plunge into the Lower Saluda’s icy cold bottom waters of Lake Murray — in January.

In years past, water was released in quantity upriver at the dam at Lake Murray to help produce Class IV and V rapids for the race.

The Millrace Massacre is to begin at 12:30 pm and the Iceman Championships at 3 pm.
