NCA team golf in Year 1

Maryn Brewer and Caroline Bedenbaugh are Northside Christian Academy seniors who have provided the foundation for the school’s first ever girls golf team.

The duo represented the Lady Crusaders as individuals for the first few years. With some young new 7th graders, there was enough participation to compete as a team.

In order for a school to field a team in a competition, there must be 4 players as 4 scores comprise the team total.

The typical team consists of 5 players and are often referred to as the “traveling team.” The best 4 scores out of the 5 team members account for the score total.

Annie Nagel, Madelyn Stover, and Mackenzie Litton, joined the team allowing NCA to compete as a school in both matches and tournaments.

“The team has had some top finishes this season including victories over Hammond, Heathwood Hall, and Wilson Hall,” said Karie Phillips, spokesperson for the athletic department. “The 6-player roster contains 5th year player and founding senior member Maryn Brewer, senior Caroline Bedenbaugh, 7th graders Mackenzie Litton, Annie Nagel, Madelyn Stover, and 5th grader Logan Dailey.

Dailey cannot participate in tournaments, but NCA did place 10th in its 1st SCISA state championship held at Woodcreek Farms.

The golf coach for the team is the Upper School Principal Glenn Smith.

The tournament season for high school girls golf for the public schools has begun and will offer site/event locations for those interested in watching today’s junior standouts and

tomorrow’s superstars.

Remember from last week when I stated walking and watching nine holes can be approximately 2 miles. I am currently experimenting with how much walking is involved while riding in a golf cart.

On 2 occasions in the last 10 days, I have played 9 holes riding in a golf cart My cellphone recorded almost 1.5 miles each round and there were no cart path restrictions. What’s my objective here? To possibly provide some incentive and tracks for blending fitness into golf. The riding discovery is quite interesting and I look forward to further investigation.

Speaking of discoveries, Tommy Langdale is a Titleist Performance Institute Certified, Physical Therapist in Chapin. He’s quite good at keeping golfers in the game. I discovered him through his work on patients at local golf courses.

TPI is an entity that focuses on golf-specific movement variables blended with exercise. His certification gives him an ability to speak a golfers movement language while assisting them in their “Return to Play” pursuit.

More next week, so stay tuned.

In local golf, John Stoudemayer, retired Lutheran pastor, at 69 years old recorded a personal best 3-under-par 33 on 9 holes at Mid-Carolina Club.

How about a personal record best at 69. Wow.
