Relax.

Unless you are a Lexington District 2 property taxpayer, your school taxes aren’t going up.

As we reported last week, Lexington District 2’s board approved a 4.26% tax hike in its $84.3 million budget.

The Chronicle asked the other 4 school districts if their plans called for a property tax increase in view of rising costs and a state ordered teacher pay raise.

Mary Beth Hill of Lexington 1 in Lexington, Gilbert and Pelion said they plan no tax increase “although, we could have used one.”

Katrina Goggins in School District 5 in Chapin and Ir-mo said the budget in her growing district includes no tax increase this year.

We have not heard from District 3 in Batesburg-Leesville or District 4 in Gaston and Swansea yet.

The tax increase in Lexington 2 in the Cayce and West Columbia area will cost $26 a year per $100,000 value of business property.

Owner-occupied homes will not be affected.

The $756,703 increase will go to the addition of 4 middle and high school teachers, elementary and middle school library improvements, 3 mental health care professionals, teacher salary increases for 23 years experience, special education sports equipment and a $43,990 contingency fund.
