The Brookland-Cayce Bearcats knocked off previously undefeated Gilbert 28-21 Oct. 27 to clinch the Region V-3A championship.
Dynamic Bearcats playmaker Will Young got the scoring started with a rushing touchdown halfway through the first quarter. The Bearcats carried that lead into the second and extended the lead to 14-0 after another rushing touchdown, this time from De’Shaun Washington.
Gilbert bounced back in a big way and got on the board with a rushing touchdown from Trevon Williamson, who rushed for 95 yards on the night. With less than ten seconds left until halftime, the Indians completed the first half comeback with a Jaylen Jay rushing touchdown to tie things up at 14 going into the halftime break.
The third quarter was the Washington show as he scored two more touchdowns to give the Bearcats a commanding 28-14 lead going into the final quarter.
Gilbert was able to get back within one possession after a touchdown pass from Drake Braddock to Connor Gooding but that was the closest they would get as Brookland-Cayce powered their way to a win and a region championship, their second in three years.
The loss is the first of the year for Gilbert and will put them in second place in the region, which will still allow them to host their first round playoff game against Darlington.
For Brookland-Cayce, the region championship allows them to also start their playoff journey at home but will also have home field advantage in the second round if they take care of business against Lake City.
