The parking lot at Lexington High School was full of the sound of sirens and children's excitement as Touch a Truck took over the space Saturday, Aug. 5.
The event was put together by the school resource officers in Lexington Sheriff’s Department. Bob Stoker, SRO at Lexington High was the primary organizer.
“When we put this on, it shows that we're giving back to the community and helping out,” Stoker said. “We also just get to show people what's out there in the world.”
But the event wasn’t just for the kids, it was for anyone in the community. Kids and adults alike had the chance to ask questions and explore a variety of vehicles.
The Lexington County Fire Service, Dominion Energy, the American Heritage Foundation and the state Department of Natural Resources were just a few organizations that offered up vehicles for children to climb in and learn about.
Organizers hope to put together a more career-focused event for high school students in the future.
“Next year, we talked about possibly trying to do more of a career fair, and to get more vehicles,” Stoker said. “Whether it's a dog grooming business, food trucks, or something of that nature, showing different careers is important.”
