RECOGNITION

Pine Ridge’s Midland team defeated Leland of North Carolina 4-3 to win the Dixie Youth World Series.

In the tournament in Lumberton, NC, Midland defeated Virginia, Texas, and Mississippi on the way to the final on Aug. 8.

In the postseason, Midland lost only one game - to Louisiana in the double-elimination tournament.

During this run, Midland outscored their opponents 228-24, Midland DYB President Steve Knight said.

Knight congratulated the team’s coaches Matt Hornsby, Shawn Bennett and Lester Sharpe for their second World Series Championship in three years.

Midland Minors won the DYB World Series in 2016. He said the Midland league has a tradition of success.

“This is the sixth World Series Championship for Midland, and our third in three years,” Knight said. “We say Midland Pride all day long, but what most people do not understand is that its not just a slogan, it is truly our way of life in our community.

“ We take pride in everything we have and we are so very proud to bring this title back to Town of Pine Ridge.”

Season ends for Post 193/24

The dreams of claiming a second American Legion World Series title ended Aug. 8 for Chapin/Newberry Post 193/24.

Chapin/Newberry was eliminated from the Southeast Regional at Asheboro, N.C. It lost the opening game 8-2 to host team Randolph County, then fell to fellow South Carolina team Sumter Post 15 by a 5-0 score in the elimination game. Ironically, Post 193/24 defeated Sumter twice to claim the South Carolina American Legion tournament. Sumter would get eliminated the next day. Chapin/Newberry finished 20-7.
