It seems like there’s always a new virus or scam circulating, but how can we protect ourselves from actual device theft? Here are a few steps to keep your phone safe from thieves.
Record your numbers
The serial number, IMEI and MEID are details police will ask for when filing a report. Saving these numbers in advance can save you time if your phone is stolen or goes missing. Find them in your device settings, or the IMEI can be found by dialing *#06#.
Lock your phone
In 2013, Consumer Reports found that 64% of users didn’t lock their phones at all. Yikes! When choosing a locking mechanism remember that Required Attention Face ID and Fingerprints are the most secure as they can’t be mimicked. They are followed by pattern-based locks, passwords, and pin numbers.
Install a ‘Find My Phone’ app
Google “Find My Device” is free. It can make your phone ring for 5 minutes, even if it is set on silent. (A lifesaver for those of us who misplace phones regularly.) It also has the option to lock your device, sign out of your Google account, and display a message on the screen. If securing your data is more important than finding the phone, you can also erase your data remotely.
Watch your device
If you’re not a Millenial, you might not have your phone glued to your hand, but keep it in a safe place when not in use. If you’re having trouble getting into the habit, consider a wallet case or getting a wallet large enough to put your phone in. It’ll make it easier to remember to keep your phone in your line of sight when out and about.
