Registration deadline for County Chili Cookout is Friday

On Jan. 27, the Icehouse Amphitheater will be the hub for yet another year of the Lexington County Chili Cookoff.

The event has been successful since its first year in 2015, when it was held at Lexington County Baseball Stadium. Lexington County Blowfish co-owner Bill Shanahan and Old Mill Brew Pub’s John Clinger are looking to make the 2019 edition the best one yet.

The Chili Cookoff idea actually originated in Clinger’s home state of Pennsylvania.

“Before I was even born really,” he said.

Since John and Kelly Clinger moved to South Carolina, he felt a Chili Cookoff would be the type of event that folks in Lexington would enjoy. And with each passing year, the event is becoming more stitched into the fabric of Lexington.

Last year’s event was postponed twice before the weather finally cooperated on the third attempt to hold the Cookoff.

The plan this year for Clinger and company?

“Oh, it’s a rain or shine event,” Clinger stated. “The chili teams will be under covering. The entertainment will be under the cover on stage. If it rains a bit, just make sure to bring an umbrella. But the weather should be perfect.”

Speaking of music, Lexington’s Freeway Music will be providing the entertainment as they did last year. John did mention that there will be a surprise guest for entertainment as well.
