Holding the number-one player in South Carolina high school girls’ basketball to one second-half field goal would seem like a recipe for victory.
For second-ranked Gray Collegiate Academy, however, it still was not enough to upend top-ranked W.J. Keenan and University of South Carolina-bound guard Milaysia Fulwiley.
The Lady Raiders defeated the Lady War Eagles 57-48 in the Region 4-2A matchup.
“You would have hoped for a win,” Gray Collegiate head coach Brandon Wallace said. “I think the effort we seen to play with all the time, not when we get down. So obviously, going into the next game, we’re looking to keep that second-half energy up going into Friday.”
Fulwiley had 24 points, 17 coming in the first half. After she hit a three-pointer to extend the Lady Raiders’ halftime lead, W.J. Keenan were outscored 20-6 in the third quarter to fall behind 41-39.
Kadence Walker-Lee led Gray Collegiate with 16 points, followed by Alyssa Woodluck with 11 points and Maliyiah Mason with 10. The Irmo High School transfer made her return after missing the Jan. 14 game at the MLK Bash with a head injury.
While Fulwiley continued to struggle, Gray Collegiate increased its lead to 45-41. The Lady Raiders proceeded to run off 10 unanswered points, none by Fuliwiley as part of a 16-3 game-ending run.
“They played good defense in spurts,” W.J. Keenan head coach Reggie McLain said. “They turned over at times and that’s what we try to work on, try to get some activity on the ball and run some different sets.”
Tierra Griffith helped the offense with 12 points, including a layup off a behind-the-back pass by Fulwiley. She also drew a key offensive foul in the final minutes to go with four straight free throws.
The two teams meet again Jan. 20 in Columbia. Wallace said his team can’t afford to miss as many field goals late as it did at home.
“We’ve got to play our brand of basketball,” he said. “I want to see how that group started that second half; I want to see that from the jump if you want to play against a championship team like Keenan. They’ve got championship pedigree and you must match that early. Otherwise, they’ll impose their will.”
Lindsay Garner had her fourth straight 20-plus point game with 21 points and Jenna Yanity had 12 to lead the fourth-ranked Lady Wildcats to their 12th straight region win and 13th consecutive at home.
Charlize Misick-Rivas had nine points for Lexington, who return to action Jan. 24 at home against Dutch Fork.
Vanessa Borrero-Garcia had 10 points for the Lady Timberwolves.
Christyonna Jackson scored 18 points, Antoinet Cheeseboro had 16 points, Hillary Offing finished with 15 and Tayah Anderson added 11 for the Lady Silver Foxes.
Ahleira Leaphart scored 20 points as the Lady Indians picked up their first Region 5-3A win of the season.
It was an historic night both individually and as a team for the Crusaders.
In helping Northside Christian amass a single-game record for points, Dane Sundell led it with 28 points, including a school-record tying 7 3-pointers. Sullie Crider finished with 23 points and Braden Patterson had 17 points on 5, 3-pointers.
Yasir Cromer scored 15 points and Omari Caldwell had 12 for the Gators in the loss.
Up next is a Region 4-5A matchup with Dutch Fork at home Jan. 20.
Bryson Taylor scored 10 points and Jarvis Green added nine to lead the Silver Foxes.
Caymen Collins and Cooper Raines each had 10 points for the Eagles.
LeBron Fields scored 13 points and Donnell Goodwin had 10 for the Tigers.
Cam Scott scored 31 points, Jose Figueroa, Jaxon Prunty and Coulter Bell all had 10 points eaches for the fourth-ranked Wildcats, who improved to 3-0 in Region 4-5A
