Six schools immersed in computers

Dr. Greg Little, superintendent of Lexington School District One, was the speaker at last week’s meeting of the Greater Lexington Chamber of Commerce.

Dr Little said the district is on the cutting edge of technology with six elementary schools participating in computer science immersion. There are 17,605 devices like Macbooks and Chrombebooks issued to students. The students are recognized as state and national winners in the fine arts, with 81% being enrolled in this field. District students have won 11 lower state and state champtioships this year.

Four schools are participating in language immersion programs, he said. And familes have saved more than $2 million in college tuition through dual enrollment, with 500 students earning 3,000 college credits. He also assured parents that their children’s safety at school is always the district’s utmost concern.

Cindy Powell was named Ambassador of the Month for the chamber.

The Lexington County GOP met last week with Attorney General Alan Wilson as guest speaker. He said three big issues facing South Carolinians are nuclear waste sites, offshore drilling and human sex trafficking.

The county GOP meets the first Monday of each month at 6:30 pm at the Greater Lexington Chamber of Commerce.

State Rep. Chris Wooten continues to heal from a copperhead snake bite he received last week while walking his dog.

Ronnie Wingard killed a rattlesnake last week after wife Joy saw it while watering plants near their garage. Be careful out there! Cooperheads are especially active in our area, and most active between 7 and 9 pm.

The Swinging Medallions attracted a crowd at their performance at the Icehouse Amphitheater last Thursday. In attendance were Sheri Kimball, Marlene and Dean Wheeler, Tripp Garrick, Jean Dyson, Patsy Zint, Betsy Kosh, Gloria and Charles Rice, Phil Dooley, Andrea and Ray Steele, Brenda and Mack Maxwell, Mickey Ann Burnett, Susan Wright, Myra Stogner, Lynn and Buddy Brewer, Ann Cromer, Leah Fitts, Ashley Cagle and Jimmy Burton.

Beryl and Don Roberts of Lexington recnelty took a trip to visit grandchildren and a new great-grandchild in Kentucky. While there, they visited Noah’s Ark. They were astounded that it was so huge – the capacity of 522 railroad box cars with three decks.

Augusta, GA., is hosting its Iron Man competition September 29. Lexington County’s Julia Norcia and Alyson Phillips have been training to participate. Good luck to both gals.

Sheriff Jay Koon kicked off his re-election campaign Sunday afternoon with lots of family and friends atThe Grove. An old-fashioned chicken stew was prepared by chief cook Steve “Bauki” Bounight, which was enjoyed by all.

Don’t forget, the final “Art in the Garden” is Sept. 20, 6-10:30 pm, at Wingard’s Nursery to benefit Mission Lexington. It features music, food, fun and art.
