State must reform outdated tax structure

Forecast 2019

As a business owner, my focus this year is to promote state tax reform.

In 2017, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act helped us at Nephron Pharmaceuticals and other businesses by cutting federal taxes, allowing growth and higher pay for our employees.

South Carolina needs to reform state taxes to benefit businesses that are investing in local infrastructure.

We are pleased new businesses are moving into our area. With a reformed tax system, they are likely to invest further and expand.

This is a direct benefit to our citizens.

South Carolina as a whole has proven to be a great place for resources and workforce.

Our state offers economic diversity, a thriving labor force and great resources, making this a great place to live, work and play.

The South Carolina current tax code was built for a 1950’s economy.

In 2019, as the Chair of the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, I am going to work with policy makers and chamber leaders to update the tax code.

If we get it right, it will bring more opportunities for the citizens of the Midlands and Palmetto State.

Lou Kennedy is CEO of Nephron Phammaceuticals.
