Summit talked clean-up event, light installation at recent council meeting

Posted

At its regular March 21 meeting, Summit Town Council discussed the date for a cleaning event and voted to enter a contract with Dominion Energy for new lights.

The small town that neighbors Gilbert  would be partnering with the Litter Free Lexington County, SC initiative, which looks to make the county a cleaner place. According to Mayor David Reese, Cayce was the last municipality to partner with the group.

“It means a lot,” Reese said. “You're getting the recognition down there, and kind of put us on the map so to speak.”

The event is now slated to take place April 17 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and will likely be called Spring Sweep in Summit: A Litter Free Lexington County South Carolina event for the Great American Clean-Up.

According to Keep America Beautiful, the national organization that puts on the annual Great American Clean-Up, it’s a “litter cleanup initiative designed to aesthetically improve our environment by creating cleaner parks, streetscapes, and public spaces through litter removal and elimination.”

Reese addressed those in attendance, saying Litter Free wants the town to select a roughly two-mile stretch of road that the town feels needs the most attention. A location has not been selected, but the council and community members in attendance mentioned a variety of options.

Litter Free will provide volunteers, refreshments, cleaning supplies and advertisement for the event, including a press release and other marketing materials.

The town will provide a space for volunteers to park in an empty field near Town Hall.

Council also discussed and voted to enter a contract with Dominion Energy for two poles and four lights.

According to a Dominion Energy representative in attendance, the five-year contract requires no money up front when it comes to the installation of the new equipment, adding that if the town were to cancel at any time the removal would cost around $350.

Reese told the Chronicle that Summit has switched a majority of its lights to LEDs, with the remaining ones near the town park being part of the contract. The two new lights and poles will be placed on West Hampton Street.

“We always say no news is good news,” Reese said of the town’s meetings. “It was just kind of a smooth sailing, and we generally have a good little crowd and there are sometimes it's more”

Members of the community spoke about beautifying the field adjacent to Town Hall, mentioning the addition of dogwood trees, bushes and benches. Reese said council plans on looking into it, including starting to get quotes from landscaping companies.
