Surgeon’s manslaughter trial delayed

Authorities reluctant to disclose details of case

A Lexington County judge has delayed a Cayce orthopedic surgeon’s manslaughter trial.

Local officials are reluctant to discuss the case of Dr. Adam Lazzarini in the:

• 2017 death of his wife, Vanessa Brooke Biery, at their home.

• The fatal shooting of Player Holland, a medical salesman the same year at the same place.

The 11th Circuit Solicitor’s office would only say Judge Debra McCaslin delayed the trial but gave no reason.

Lazzarini has been charged in the shooting of Holland Oct. 9, 2017.

Authorities have not said if he has been charged also in his wife’s death.

Holland, 30, died of a single gunshot wound in the chest in the Lazzarini home.

Police originally believed Holland’s death was accidental.

They later found evidence connecting the deaths, Byron Snellgrove, director of Cayce Public Safety, said.

Lazzarini turned himself in and was charged with involuntary manslaughter and obstructing justice.

Snellgrove confirmed that the death of Lazzarini’s wife is suspicious, but did not elaborate.

Lazzarini, 46, specialized in orthopedic surgery at Southeastern Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine in West Columbia.

Biery and Lazzarini were married in 2008, according to a wedding announcement in The New York Times.

It said Biery was a recruiter for investment banking and asset management companies.

Holland was a sales representative for CrossLink Orthopaedics/Stryker, Cayce Department of Public Safety Capt. Jim Crosland told The State newspaper.

Player’s family issued this statement:

“All we have wanted since our son’s death has been to know what happened to him. None of the accounts we have heard so far make sense.

“We pray that the judicial process will bring us the truth and bring justice for Player.”
