Swansea, Gilbert players excel on region stage, win Athlete of the Week

Posted

Another week of high school sports has come and gone in Lexington County, which means it’s time to announce another round of Athlete of the Week winners.

This week’s victors hail from Swansea and Gilbert and were selected as nominees after putting up big numbers in key region wins.

Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration, email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchronicle.com.

Deandre Caldwell

Swansea got back in the win column this week after a dominant performance on the ground from running back Deandre Caldwell.

The Tigers got their first region win of the season last week, beating Airport 48-28. In the victory, Caldwell rushed for 232 yards and three touchdowns.

He also got some run on defense, recording four total tackles.

The junior has now eclipsed 750 yards and eight touchdowns this season. He is averaging over 10 yards per carry and is the main weapon of Swansea’s offense.

As the Tigers get deeper into their season, the team will continue relying on Caldwell to put up big numbers.

Kaylie Spires

Gilbert volleyball setter Kaylie Spires has played a large role in the team’s recent turnaround.

The Indians started the season 1-8 but have since improved to 10-14 overall, including a perfect 7-0 in region games. The team won both of its contests last week, sweeping Camden and Brookland-Cayce each 3-0.

Spires was crucial in both of those games, leading the Indians in assists.

The junior combined for 27 in the two games, scoring 16 against Camden and 11 against the Bearcats.

Her contributions did not stop there, as she also led the team in digs against Brookland-Cayce and led in blocks against Camden. She also recorded multiple aces and kills.

With only a handful of games left in the regular season, Gilbert will keep leaning on Spires to set up its offense and deliver victories.
