“Think less and play faster”

Having the chance to watch the US Open with my children was just about as much fun as actually playing golf with them.

It was especially intriguing watching with Wesley because he has played Torrey Pines and played in major championships. He also is really good friends with John Rahm and knows his game well.

Here’s what he said Friday afternoon about John Rahm’s game.

“John is the best bunker player I have ever seen,” he said.

Just as Rahm stepped into the bunker, Wesley made the comment. Rahm then duffed it and did not even get it out of the bunker.

“Even after the duff, dad, he is the best I have ever seen,” Wesley continued.

Rahm made a further mess out of the next shot, but redeemed himself out of the sand later in the round by holing out for birdie.

“John also is the best driver, ball striker and putter I have ever seen, and can’t see him not winning numerous majors,” Wesley said.

His best friend, Russell Henley, was actually leading so it was doubly entertaining seeing how excited Wesley was for his buddies.

I couldn’t resist being critical every now and again to see if I could stir Wesley. He caught on quick and didn’t fall for my charm, until Russell missed it from 2 feet on the last hole Friday.

“He hit that putt too quick. His routine was too fast,” was my comment and Wesley quickly defended his fast routine which was fantastic for me.

“It’s how he always does it” was Wesley’s exact words in defense of Henley.

Here is the short lesson for today. Go out, and try to play faster. Think less and play faster. Use this as training, like the “hurry up offense” drills in other sports.

Let’s take it another step. Call the local course, get the 1st tee time and enjoy our beautiful summer mornings. Share with the pros at the club what you are doing and they may create an early time for you.

One last mention about fast play. Unless there is a safety problem, avoid asking your child to slow down if you have children that want to hit it quick. Dr. Bob Rotella was the 1st one who gave me this advice and it worked out really good for not just my children, but all the others that I had the privilege of teaching.

There is a special golf training initiative being introduced called Impact Conditioning through the “Players Club at Main Event”. It will highlight some of the above mentioned information. Registration should be available soon so visit www. maincoursesc.com. Click on the players club tab at the top of page for a preview.

One last suggestion. Visit www.scjga.org and find the Hootie Summer Series. Look at the schedule and figure out which course is closest to you. Then get out and watch kids play golf because they get it right.
