The story of the tree that survived 9/11 is a fascinating one.

One mangled tree was discovered in the ashes of the World Trade Center after th attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

The “Survivor Tree” produced over 400 saplings. It is a story of resilience, hope and memorial to the 2,753 lives lost.

Now, Columbia has a sapling from that tree.

The 9/11 Survivor Tree sapling was acquired earlier this year by Tom and Cherie Resta after a request to the 9/11 First Responder group The Fealgood Foundation.

Resta, who lost 3 family members in the north tower of the World Trade Center, believed that the mission of Columbia’s 9/11 Memorial group was a match for a survivor sapling.

“My brother John Resta, who was murdered that day, was proud of our family’s long history of serving in New York’s police and fire departments,” Resta said.

“We are a proud military family as well. I thought that this would be the perfect way to honor him as we approach the 20th anniversary of 9/11 in 2021.”
