Tuesday Night Spring Sports: P.J. Morlando's 4 RBI, 2 home runs lift Summerville past Brookland-Cayce

Airport, Batesburg-Leesville improve to 5-0

P.J. Morlando apparently did not leave his home run power at River Bluff High School.

The Summerville junior, a Mississippi State commit who’s already projected as an early Major League Baseball draft selection in 2024, wowed the crowd in The Swamp with 42 home runs in two rounds to win the Opterra Solutions Invitational this past weekend.

Against the second-ranked Bearcats, Morlando was back in the swing of things at home.  He belted two long home runs and had four RBI in the 6-1 win.

Jackson Thomas had a RBI sacrifice for Brookland-Cayce’s lone run. The Bearcats were held to five hits and struck out 10 times by Green Wave pitchers.

The two teams meet again on March 9. This time, the Bearcats will play host to the Green Wave and welcome back Morlando to Lexington County.

Batesburg-Leesville 4, Saluda 2

Cade Bouknight struck out eight batters, Cole Price scored three runs and Tanner Watkins went 2-3 to keep the Panthers undefeated at 5-0 on the season.

Steven Todd and Jackson Love each drove in a run as the Panthers improved to 5-0 on the season.

The Tigers scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh on an inside-the-park home run by Jack McCary.

Airport 4, Aiken 2

Josh Raines hit a three-run homer in the first inning and Hunter Epps allowed just four hits in seven innings as the Eagles improved to 5-0 on the season.

Airport plays host to Fairfield Central on March 9.

Richard Winn 12, Northside Christian Academy 2

Swansea 13, Lake Marion 4

Jacob Hair struck out 18 batters and Tyson Churchwell went 2-4 with two RBI to lead the Tigers.

Jacob Harper was 2-3 for Swansea, who travel to North on March 9

Softball

Lexington 9, Lugoff-Elgin 5

Maggie Hinz and Gracie Scott both had two hits and two RBI and Livi Warren and Alaina Harry both had two hits and drove in a run for the Lady Wildcats.

Julia Nation pitched three innings and allowed just one run before getting relieved by Haley Manz.

Lexington stays on the road to face Blythewood on March 9.

River Bluff 6, Saluda 4

Sam Gillis and Chloe Shoultz each drove in two runs and Georgia Gilman struck out three to lead the Lady Gators.

Dorman 2, Chapin 1

The Lady Cavaliers posted back-to-back RBI singles in the bottom of the seventh to defeat the Lady Eagles.

Maddie McMillion accounted for Chapin’s lone run with a single to score Andee Dircks in the second inning.

Leah Cabe allowed six hits to take the loss.

Gilbert 21, Dreher 2

Carley Melton went 3-5 with five RBI and Makynzi Sprague, Whitney Rogers and Ainsley Minchew all had two RBI each as the Lady Indians scored 10 runs in the fifth inning to open Region 5-3A play with a victory.

Izabella Adams struck out eight batters and allowed just one hit in four innings for the win.

March 6 Game

Brookland-Cayce 11, Wagener-Salley 8

Emily Kelly went 4-4 with three RBI and Cameryn Moody went 3-4 with an inside the park home run and struck out 12 batters to lead the Lady Bearcats.
