Mental health evaluations set for student

The student who threatened White Knoll High last week has a history of bad behavior.

The unnamed 16-year-old made online threats Aug. 12 to shoot up the school and kill himself.

The student posted the threats on an online communications platform called Discord, according to police.

Another student discovered the threats and sent screenshots of the messages to White Knoll Principal Ted Daughtrey.

The school then alerted the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department. Deputies contacted the student at his home.

He has a long disciplinary history at the school, the police said.

The student’s father told deputies that the student is autistic and has a dark sense of humor. He told deputies the student makes “jokes” of self-harm to get attention.

His father told deputies his son has no access to firearms at home.

Deputies received permission to search the student’s room and found no weapons.

After speaking with the student and his father, deputies contacted Community Crisis Response and Intervention about the student.

CCRI provides emergency psychiatric screening and assessment.

State Department of Mental Health professionals work with the sheriff’s department on calls associated with people who might be a threat to harm themselves or others, Lexington County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Adam Myrick told the Chronicle.

Responding therapists with CCRI interviewed the student and determined he needed further evaluation at the mental health facility.

Both the student and his mother agreed.

The student has been charged with making threats towards a school.

He has been released to his parents and is awaiting a court date.

The Chronicle has asked Lexington School District 1 what steps it plans to take in regard to the student and any other threats of violence against county schools.
