West Columbia Police report successfully talking down a man from a transmission tower in the early evening on March 23.

According to a release, 59-year-old Michale Mooore was lowered to the ground from the tower at the corner of Charleston Highway, Airport Boulevard and Williams Street. The release notes that the department’s Crisis Negotiations Team was able to talk Moore down.

“This type of call illustrates how our officers assist those in a mental health crisis,” West Columbia Police Chief Marion Boyce is quoted. “I am thankful we could bring Mr. Moore down safely and make the needed resources available.”

Moore was transported to the hospital for medical and mental health evaluations, the release notes.

The department posted to Facebook at a little before 5 p.m. that it was dealing with a situation at the intersection that was “partially affecting the roadway,” asking drivers to avoid the area.

The release notes that West Columbia Police responded to the location following a call for service received at 4:30 p.m. and Moore was lowered from the tower at about 6:30 p.m.

The department thanked the Cayce Police Department, Cayce Fire Department, Lexington County Fire Department and the West Columbia Fire Department for assisting during the response.
