West Columbia to honor USC’s Dawn Staley

City of West Columbia officials will hold a celebration this Monday honoring University of South Carolina women’s basketball coach and USA Olympic basketball coach Dawn Staley.

A drop-in ceremony will be held at City Hall at 200 N. 12th St. starting at 10 am to celebrate her accomplishment of bringing home a gold medal in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

The games were held in Tokyo Jul. 23 to Aug. 8, 2021, after being postponed due to the pandemic in 2020. Staley coached the US

Staley coached the US women’s basketball team during the Olympic Games, making this the 7th straight gold medal the US women’s basketball team has brought home in the Olympics.

She’s coming off a 2020-21 season in which she led the Gamecocks to a 6th Southeastern Conference title and 3rd NCAA Tournament Final 4 appearance.

In 21 seasons, Staley has posted an overall record of 503-183. In 13 seasons with the Gamecocks, she has won 331 games, won 5 regular season titles and the 2017 national title.
