Why fall and playing golf are a perfect match

Fall is the best season to go play golf.

The courses are in the best condition of the year, our weather is amazing and the courses are available.

We have football season to thank for this, as it makes weekend afternoon tee times easy to get. With course crowds light, it’s possible to play many holes.

This leads me to this week’s short golf tip: Make your plans and go play. If you are running low on “personal or vacation days,” I’ll write you a “note”.

And see how many holes you can play. While being safe, see how many holes you can play in 30 minutes. When you get to your golf ball, just look at the target and react with little to no thinking.

A good friend, Rich Williams, explained how he views this idea.

“I just turn my mind off, turn off thinking and just swing,” he said.

Try turning your mind off and turning your golf-playing “jets” on.

Our community is 1 of the most fertile seed beds for golfers in the world.

True passion for golf is the short and simple explanation. Dru Nix started her Gilbert High School girls Class 3A state championship team in the “price pasture” 5 years ago. Cathy Hill got her Swansea Girls golf team started by inviting girls into the game through the more popular spring season. Ben Lippen School utilized a similar approach this season — more on that next week.

Last week, I promised to preview the Lexington Wildcat Girls Golf team. Coach Brandon Smith has done an amazing job, accumulating numerous state titles.

“We are having to replace 4 of our top 6 golfers from last year’s state championship team,” he said. “We do return 2 seniors in Isabella Rawl (Clemson commit) and Bella Bernagozzi, but are very young after that. I am very excited about our younger girls though and I think we will be fine, hopefully, by the end of the year.”

The coach added that he has several girls who have stepped up to challenge for the 3-4-5, explaining that 8th grader Taryn Smoak is in the lead for the 3 spot, while freshman Brook Burgess has the edge for the 4th spot.

Several others are vying for the 5th starting spot, he said, highlighting sophomore Karys Clampitt, 7th grader Adysen Langdale and freshmen Lillie Howell and Kathryn White as players in contention.

Each of our local recreation entities offer Family Golf Developmental options. These programs are fun and multi-generational. Golf lends itself to different generations playing and learning the game together.
