Will lawmakers allow voting remotely?

Voting change to be presented

Is it dangerous for you to go to the polls?

A few lawmakers think so.

They will be urging a change in the state’s absentee ballot process.

Their bill being introduced in the House says voting adjustments are needed to protect voters’ health.

Voters can choose several options as an acceptable reason to vote absentee.

Right now, a pandemic is not one of those reasons.

Some lawmakers say it should be. They’re looking to make that change with this new bill.

Rep. Wendy Brawley, D-Richland County, is a cosponsor of the bill being introduced.

She says this change in law would allow more people to vote from the safety of their homes.

If passed, this bill would eliminate the current requirement for a witness on each returned absentee ballot.

In April, the American Civil Liberties Union sued the Election Commission and Gov. Henry McMaster over the absentee voting process.
