Driving is becoming more dangerous and challenging than ever before in Lexington. I never thought I’d see the day that by simply getting older my fitness to drive would be unjustly construed in a front page article “Older SC drivers are dangerous.” A common misconception is that older drivers are the greatest risk to others. This is not true. Driving at any age requires practicing safe driving skills, avoiding distractions and watching for distracted drivers. Most of the time drivers just hop in their car and take off without any thought of driving safely. Wrecks happen because drivers are inattentive, impatient, speeding, tailgating, failing to follow rules or ignoring traffic signs and signals. These are preventable. I love my hometown, county and state and would prefer traffic statistics reflect that safe driving is a priority in the Lexington area. Wouldn’t it be wonderful for Lexington to be known for its safe drivers and roadways? I challenge all Lexington drivers to join me to become safer, more courteous drivers.
