Zumbathon rocks for Meals on Wheels

Posted

Several ladies from our community recently participated in the Rockin’ Shamrock Zumbathon for Meals on Wheels. Hosted by the Lexington County Recreational & Aging Commission, the event raises money for a good cause. Over 100 people danced for two hours to lively Latino music in their Saint Patrick’s Day costumes at the Lexington Leisure Center. We are excited to tell you over $700 was raised for the Meals on Wheels program. Our Gilbert-Summit Senior Center and each of the senior centers in Lexington County have Meals on Wheels delivered by volunteers to homebound seniors.

Center Director Donna Neel said the members enjoyed a Saint Patrick’s Day celebration. Some members wore St. Patrick’s Day attire and enjoyed St. Patrick’s Day themed snacks. Earlier this month, the members learned about Leprechauns and searched for hidden St. Patrick’s Day pictures with trivia games. Members also made cardboard Leprechauns, shamrock wreaths, and popsicle stick Leprechauns. Members made some of the St. Patrick’s Day decorations for the tree they decorate for holidays throughout the year. Members also attended the Fun and Fellowship at Beulah United Methodist Church, and the Young at Heart luncheon at First Baptist Church of Lexington. Neel said they will end the month with guest speaker Trish Shandon of the Lexington County Museum teaching how to show and upkeep vintage historical quilts. If you are a senior age 60 and above, Neel invites you to join them.

Gilbert artist Candace Cotterman Thibeault will profile photographer Kim Case at the Old Mill in Lexington this month. A reception will be held for her at the Mill March 21, 5-7 pm.

Cotton Branch Farm Sanctuary was featured on the Kelly Clarkson Show last week on WIS-TV. Clarkson is a huge animal lover who has rescued dogs and farm animals on her farm. Two of the staff at the farm and a pig named Henry were in the video which aired during her show. CBFS is suspending all volunteer and tour activities for the month of March due to the COVID-19 virus. Plans are to resume activities in April, but this may be subject to change.

The SC Department of Natural Resources will be at Prices Country Store for the annual deer scoring contest March 20, 1-5 pm. Prizes will be awarded for the top 3 highest scoring 2019 SC buck and the biggest 2019 buck in Lexington County. For information call 803-892-2457.
