5 Second rule: Do it anyway

Posted

Are you making progress with your new year’s resolutions?

Now that the pollen is starting to fall, your big plans to get in shape may seem like a distant memory.

Let’s face it: You may never wake up one morning and feel like going to the gym to work out.

You might convince yourself the night before that tomorrow is the day you’re going to get up and start.

Then tomorrow comes and you’re lying in that warm bed. It’s cold, dark and rainy outside. You don’t really feel like going anywhere – especially not out in that weather to work out.

According to Mel Robbins, author of “The 5-Second Rule,” research shows that we make the majority of our decisions about what we do based on how we feel.

Be honest with yourself and take a look at what gets done in your life. Those are the things you feel like doing.

What doesn’t get done are the things you really don’t feel like doing.

You know you should do a number of things such as become physically fit, but you may never feel like it.

Rather than waiting to feel motivated, do it anyway.

In her book, Mel Robbins describes the 5-Second Rule.

The moment you feel you should do something, don’t stop to think about it – and talk yourself out of doing it.

She suggests you do a 5-4-3-2-1 countdown and take action.

Do what you thought about.

If it’s the thought that you should go workout when you wake up, count down 5-4-3-2-1 and put your feet on the floor. Get on your workout clothes before your feelings talk you out of it.

The 5-Second Rule has helped many of my clients develop the habit of making fitness a priority even if they may not feel like it.

They’ve gained huge benefits from pushing themselves past their excuses and taking action.

What are you waiting for?

5-4-3-2-1 GO!
