Airport Extends Runway, Hopes to Expand Business

Per The Post and Courier, Lexington County plans to expand the runway at its general aviation airport. The changes will come in the next year, with the hope being to accommodate larger plans and attract more business where the airport is located in the southern part of the county.

The article details that the 5,500-foot extension will allow private jets to land at the single-runway airport, which it hopes will boost its jet fuel sales and overall revenue, along with business in Pelion, where the airport resides.

Playing in the Sand?

A 90-acre sand mine has been proposed for Lexington County, per The Post and Courier.

The county received an initial zoning application for the property near Batesburg-Leesville, according to the article. The parcel sits along Interstate 20, near exit 39, and is owned by Southeast Forest Products. As the Chronicle went to press on Oct. 19, the project was set to be reviewed by the county Board of Zoning Appeals that evening.

The Post and Courier noted that Lexington County currently ahs 22 sand mines, along with two granite mines and a clay mine.
