Are you a delinquent taxpayer?

Posted

It’s that time of year again.

Delinquent tax notices will run for the next 3 weeks in our paper.

The list of names and amounts owed in property taxes are sent from the county Treasurer’s Office around this time each year.

What does it mean to be delinquent on taxes?

Lexington County Treasurer Jim Eckstrom says not paying your current tax bill for real estate and mobile homes by end of day March 16 will land you on the list.

It seems Lexington County residents are getting better at paying their bills on time. Eckstrom told the Chronicle there are about 20% less delinquent properties than last year.

“Delinquent tax sales alternate between November and December every year. There are less delinquencies for the December tax sales when the taxpayer has an additional month to pay, coupled with a strong economy and record low unemployment,” Eckstrom said.

What should you do if you find your name on the list?

Pay with cash, check or credit card to avoid any additional cost or penalty, Eckstrom said.

Go to the Lexington County Treasurer’s Office at 212 South Lake Drive, Lexington, SC 29072, Suite 102, or call (803) 785-8345 if you have any questions.

The Delinquent Tax Sale is Dec. 9 at 10 am at a location to be determined.

The tax notices are on pages 8-14 of the B section.
