August weddings abound

Due to covid-19, couples have postponed their weddings from spring until late summer.

Hamp Caughman Jr. and Jane report on their beautiful daughter Lisa’s wedding. Present also was maternal grandmother Betty Day and other family members.

Lisa Caughman and Joey Driskell were married Aug. 21 at Mt. Horeb UMC with the bride’s uncle, the Rev. Glenn Day, officiating. A reception was held in the Columbia Vista at 701 Whaley. Adjustments still had to be made to their wedding plans for this August date. The couple does appreciate everyone’s understanding in the changes that they didn’t want, but had to make tp comply with covid-19 guidelines.

Lisa and Joey met each other at Prisma Health Children’s Hospital in Columbia, where they both are employed. Lisa has been working there for 14 years as a Registered Nurse. Joey recently retired from 18 years of service in the US Army and is employed at the hospital as a respiratory therapist. He also is attending the USC School of Medicine’s PA School, where he will soon earn his degree. They will live in Lexington.

Becky Addy tells us of another special wedding: Matthew (Matt) Monroe Padgett and Lori Mack were married at a beautiful home on Lake Murray Aug. 20.

Matt is the son of Herman M. “Gett” Padgett and Debbie Huiet Padgett. A graduate of LHS, he attended Clemson University and was drafted by the Florida Marlins. He presently coaches baseball for Ben Lippin School and the Lexington Blowfish. Lori is the daughter of Larry and Brenda Mack and Mike and Lynn Abee. She is a graduate of Irmo High and USC. Lori is employed with Midlands Technical College.

Lexington District 1 will practice safety protocols to minimize student and staff exposure. That includes wearing masks, practicing social distancing and washing hands. As much as possible, students will remain and eat meals in their classrooms.”

Since school closings in March, Lexington District 2 has distributed 310,000 meals to students. A big thank you to the many people whose work made this possible.

This is the final week of the summer feeding program. Many students enjoyed daily meals. Local resident Connie Smith helped prepare and deliver them. Thanks to her husband Ray for letting us know

Look forward to the late winter sale of Girl Scout cookies. This year French toast is a new flavor. Do you think that will top the popular chocolate mint and chocolate peanut butter patties? Anne Bull reports that the Lexington Sertoma annual golf tournament scheduled Sept. 28 has been .

A new walking trail will be created at the Old Mill Pond in Lexington. The pond was destroyed when the October floods of 2015 washed out the dam. Crews are rebuilding the dam and refilling the pond. The walking trail will be a nice addition to our town.

Former Mayor Randy Halfacre, his wife Angela and their extended family spent the past week getting some R&R at Pawley’s Island before Randy resumes his duties as Community Ambassador for Columbia International University. The family spent time on the beach, finding local seafood restaurants, and just enjoying the end of summer.

Lexington’s Secret Cove neighborhood concluded its summer-long “Fun at the Field” events with a community ice cream social. Throughout the summer the neighborhood hosted food trucks on Friday evenings at the community’s soccer field, which has been a fun way for the neighbors and children to socialize and stay in touch.

DOROTHY CHRISTINE SAYS June 27 is the birthday of the woman who wrote “Good Morning to All.” Mildred Hill was born in 1859. In 1924, her younger sister wrote a new verse to the song beginning “Happy Birthday to You.” The sisters earned little money from the song and they did not know it would become so popular.
