Be a winner in the homework games

We know about The Hunger Games movie and books. Have you heard about the new, 10-month prime time nightly series, seen in homes all across the nation? It is called the “homework games.”

The nightly show is full of drama, tears, frustrating situations and sometimes shouting and yelling and PG-rated language. This nightly event is a sign that the new school year has begun. Instead of reading books for fun, students and parents now get to crack those books open to complete homework assignments.

I am relearning Pre-algebra, for the 4th time. I didn’t learn it well in 8th grade or with my two other children. I hope I get it this time with my youngest child.

There are steps a parent can take to make the homework adventure easier. Start the homework habit early in the school year and establish a time and a place specifically for homework. Eliminating distractions is a must, and taking frequent 5-10 min breaks will help the student stay focused until the work is completed. Be available to help them. Offer snacks to help them satisfy any munchies while they are studying.

A well-rounded education is not all about academics. Extracurricular activities found at Irmo-Chapin Recreation complexes are a way for all ages to expand the mind and keep healthy. Check out icrc.net for the athletic opportunities to do after the homework is done. With the fall high school football season, Marching band practice, and other activities take the time, to have down time to enjoy being with your children. They grow up too fast!

Concerned about college costs? The Adulting 101 program at the Irmo Branch Library has information you need! The program is September 10 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Call 803-798-7880 for more information

The Shepard’s center in St. Andrews has some incredibly interesting classes! The real history of fake news, creative quilting, watercolor, archaeology, and crocheting, are just a few of the classes, which start Sept.

18. Call 803-731-9394 for information.
