It is getting close to that time of year – the holidays are quickly approaching as are the crucial mid-term elections. Every vote counts. Make sure you research the candidates before you cast your vote.
In the Chapin Irmo area, we have the election for District 2 Congressional seat. Rep. Joe Wilson, a Republican, is running against Democrat Sean Carrigan, state Rep. Chip Huggins is running against Sam Edwards. In our local elections, Ken Loveless, Jan Hammond, and Ellen Baumgartner are running for our District 5 school board.
A School Board Candidate Forum will be held October 23 at Irmo Middle School from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The public will have the opportunity to ask questions of those running for school board. Email your questions to d5teacherforum@gmail.com
St Peter Lutheran Church will have a Fall Festival October 21 at 900 Dreher Island Road, 4-6:30 p.m. For family fun, there will be games, food, fall crafts and a bouncy house for the kids.
Unclaimed property is an issue! Irmo and Chapin citizens can check out the website, to see if you have cash to claim, visit www.treasurer.sc.gov/unclaimed-property/ to see whose name is on the unclaimed list. According to state Treasurer Curtis Loftis, there is over $550 million in unclaimed property. Check out the site yourself, perhaps a wealthy unknown family member left you a surprise!
My favorite food happens to be sweet potato casserole, complete with full-fat butter, cream and lots of sugar. With the holidays coming up soon, anything with sweet potatoes is going to be a favorite on the table. The Chapin Ruritan Club is selling 20-pound boxes for $12 and 80-pound boxes for $22. To order, call Albert Amick at 803-345-5060. Delivery will be November 1 at the Ruritan clubhouse.
What is new with Lake Murray? Come to find out on October 16 at Salem United Methodist Church, 6:30 p.m. Billy Chastain will tell us about water levels. Captain Ayers will give a review on boating safety, and Jim McGrath will give an update on the water quality of the lake. This meeting is for all who recreate and live on the “Jewel of South Carolina,” our Lake Murray.
