Be wary of poison ponds

Blue-green algae is a danger to you, your pets

Blue-green algae is back, perhaps in your pond or Lake Murray.

The deadly toxin in high concentrations can sicken pets and their owners.

Dogs are more vulnerable to the toxins because of their likelihood to play and drink pond water.

It can affect you, too.

This bacteria is often found in stagnant fresh water in the summer.

The so-called “algae” is actually a bacteria known as cyanobacteria.

Cyanobacteria isn’t visible to the naked eye but it often looks like algae in clumps in ponds and lakes.

Toxic cyanobacteria can grow in backyard pools and decorative ponds if they aren’t routinely cleaned.

To avoid cyanobacteria poisoning:

• Keep your dog leashed around stagnant water, especially if it looks dirty, foamy, or has mats on the surface.

• Don’t let your dog drink out of ponds and lakes.

• Toxic blooms which can be blue, vibrant green, brown or red, are sometimes mistaken for paint floating on the water. Be aware the toxins aren’t always visible.

• The toxins often stink, producing a nauseating smell. But pets may be attracted to their smell and taste.

Symptoms arise anywhere from 15 minutes to several days after exposure.

They may include:

• Diarrhea, vomiting or drooling.

• Weakness, disorientation or confusion, collapse and unconsciousness.

• Seizures or difficulty breathing.

If these signs occur, contact your vet immediately.

If caught early enough, your vet may be able to flush out the toxins before your dog dies.
