Maybe he just needed some exercise – if you call fishing exercise.

Maybe he was looking for dinner. I don’t know but MacLeod spotted him fishing beside our dock, fishing for our fish, maybe depriving our family of dinner.

I’m just kidding. If I knew who he is, I would call him and invite him back.

I’m personally happy to see people fishing, biking, hiking or just taking a walk in our neighborhood.

In these trying times, we need to look for every opportunity to get out of the house without endangering ourselves or others.

Make the most of your family time. Staying at home can be loads of fun.

OCCASIONALLY WE RECEIVE letters from subscribers questioning our motives.

Here’s one from reader Ron Shealy.

Mr. Bellune, tell me you didn’t write/approve that headline in the April 9 edition.

Okay, I realize it might help sell a few more papers from the wire racks. But the article overall doesn’t even support that level of sensationalism.

I’d want to know who are the state health officials who foresee this. And what is this “worst” they’re predicting. Put a face on it. Thousands of additional deaths? 17,000 more positive cases as your friends at The State hit us with yesterday? Overwhelmed hospitals throughout the state?

South Carolinians are social-distancing. They are staying home. So I don’t think continued scare tactics are productive.

We need to be told of all the things that indicate we’re turning the corner on this.

We need positivity, not continued gloom and doom. You would be surprised how a positive approach will change things for the better. Thank you.

HERE IS HOW I responded:

Ron, thanks for your note.

I realize the headline may seem sensationalist. It isn’t. I wrote the headline based on warnings from DHEC and CDC officials.

We don’t need sensationalism nor practice it. Only loyal subscribers like you receive the print edition now.

We have suspended our single copy print sales. Our cash flow is tight and we had to make some economies to survive.

I appreciate your feedback and the opportunity to share our thinking.

You will always get the truth - or what we are convinced is the truth - from us.

Thank you for being a member of our subscriber family.

May God bless you and yours.
