Blowfish baseball sees strong week with blowout wins

Posted

The Blowfish are coming off one of its best weeks of the season after going 5-1 in six contests last week, including two wins by more than 10 runs.

The bats were on fire all week as the team beat the Flamingos, Bacon and HiToms. Then in the field, Lexington kept its opponents’ run totals to a minimum, allowing more than five just once last week.

Lexington began the week on June 24 with a game against the Florence Flamingos. The Blowfish won 10-5 after opening a 6-1 lead in the first three innings.

Dariyan Pendergrass went 2-4 from the plate as the leadoff hitter, while Sam Busch, Ashby Vining and Christian Williams added a home run each.

The Flamingos scored most of their runs in the sixth and seventh innings, where they added four to their total. They remained scoreless the rest of the game.

Cade Bouknight got the win on the mound after pitching five innings, giving up six hits and two walks. He allowed just one run.

Lexington followed that match with a 3-1 victory over Macon in one of the closest games last week.

The Blowfish and Bacon combined for 13 hits in the game, but had one run each through the first eight innings. That changed when Lexington put two more runs on the board in the eighth, which eventually decided the game.

CJ Czerwinski had his best game of the season on the mound, earning the win after pitching six innings and recording 10 strikeouts to one walk. Czerwinski has been one of the team’s most relied-on pitchers, leading the Blowfish in innings pitched and strikeouts.

The Blowfish played its least competitive match in the next game, beating the HiToms 14-0. Lexington dominated every aspect of the game, outhitting, outpitching and outfielding the team from North Carolina.

Busch was 2-3 from the plate with three RBIs and a two-run homer. As a team, the Blowfish combined for 10 RBIs and drew 11 walks.

The Blowfish pitchers also had an impressive outing. Michael Watson earned his first win of the season after pitching five innings and allowing two hits and four walks with eight strikeouts.  Eric Moore finished the game, pitching the final two innings of a shortened contest.

Half of the Lexington team stayed home June 28 for a game against the Catawba Valley Stars while the other half hit the road for a game against the Flamingos.

The team defeated Catawba at home 7-6 after scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh and final inning.

Each team scored two runs in the first inning and stayed tied until the third inning, where the Blowfish outscored Catawba 2-1. The Stars took the lead in the sixth inning after scoring three innings, setting up a do-or-die situation for Lexington at the end of the game.

Parker Mergo hit a single in the bottom of the final inning to score two runs and tie the game.  Cade Bouknight ended the game after reaching first on an error, allowing Mergo to cross home and score the winning run.

Lexington’s win streak came to an end as the other half of the team hit the road for a game against the Flamingos. The Blowfish lost 10-2 after Florence put eight runs on the board in the sixth and seventh innings.

The Blowfish connected on just four hits in that match, while the Flamingos had 11. Florence finished with nine RBIs and was struck out only twice.

The team quickly corrected things and returned home the next day to flip the script on the Flamingos and blow them out 14-4. This time, the Blowfish ran up the score while Florence struggled to keep up.

Lexington scored nine runs in the second inning of the game to put it away early. Lexington led 12-0 by the time Florence scored its first few runs in the fifth inning.

The game was called midway through the seventh inning as the Blowfish held a 10-run lead. Florence had no answer for Lexington’s bats, even though the Flamingos made five pitching substitutions.

The Blowfish finished with 13 hits, 11 RBIs and seven walks drawn. Zach Cowart went 3-4 and had two RBIs. Landry Mead finished with three RBIs on two hits after batting near the bottom of the lineup.

Entering the final month of the Coastal Plain League season, the Blowfish are 14-16 against league opponents for fifth place against the West Division. The team has five games this week, including a special Fourth of July exhibition match that will end with postgame fireworks.
