The 2nd half of the Coastal Plain League season has gone in elevator-like fashion for the Lexington County Blowfish.

The Blowfish were 3-3 entering Tuesday. This tied for 3rd place in the West Division with the Asheboro Copperheads for 4th place behind Savannah, High Point-Thomasville and Macon.

Should 1st half champion Savannah win the 2nd half, the 2nd Petitt Cup West playoff berth would be determined by overall record. Currently, the Hi-Toms (17-10) lead followed by Asheboro (14-14) and the Blowfish (13-14).

Lexington County suffered 2 straight losses to the Bacon. The 1st on July 2 saw the Blowfish use 7 pitchers in a 5-4 loss in 10 innings.

Chapin’s William Privette of the College of Charleston struck out the 1st 6 batters faced and accounted for 8 of his team’s 16 strikeouts in 3 scoreless innings.

However, the Blowfish also struck out 16 times as a team. In addition, the bullpen surrendered 8 walks, including 4 in a 4-run inning for the Bacon.

The following night saw walks prove costly again for the Blowfish in a 6-4 loss to Macon. All 6 runs scored by the Bacon came off starter CJ Czerwinski and were the result of 4 of 6 issued walks.

A pair of positives from the loss came from 1st baseman Brock Vradenburg and pitcher Aaron White of Irmo. Vradenburg belted a 2-run homer and White struck out 4 in 6 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.

The largest home crowd of the season in attendance on July 4 witnessed the Blowfish snap the 2-game skid with a 7-5 win over the Spartanburgers. Both Vradenburg and Corey Seltzer drove in 2 runs and starter Caden Noah of Texas had 4 of the team’s 13 strikeouts in 4 scoreless innings.

For the 2nd time in 3 games, the Blowfish utilized 7 pitchers. The Spartanburgers managed to rally in the 7th inning scoring 3 runs off 3 walks from reliever Jonah Jenkins.

The win improved the Blowfish to 7-1 on the season over the Spartanburgers with 3 games left against them. Lexington County’s remaining schedule also has 5 games left versus Savannah, 3 each against Florence and Macon and 1 against Forest City.
