High School sports action resumed last week after Hurricane Helene delayed events around Lexington County.

This week’s Athlete of the Week winners hail from River Bluff and Lexington. These two battled through the adversity of missed time and came up clutch for their teams to deliver a win in big region matchups.

Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchonicle.com

Tripp Bryant

River Bluff’s Tripp Bryant helped the Gators stay undefeated and upset defending region champions White Knoll 24-21 in overtime.

The Georgia Southern commit missed two long field goals early in the match but remained locked in and confident as he attempted a 27-yard kick to win the game. On River Bluff's first play of the extra period, Bryant split the uprights and gave his team its first region win since 2022. He also played a big part in setting White Knoll up with tough field position on punts and kickoffs.

This season, the senior is 14 for 15 on extra points and has four made field goals. River Bluff will be on the road this week against undefeated Irmo. Bryant’s ability to get points and pin teams deep will be crucial if the Gators want to pull off another upset.

Sydney Fischer

Sydney Fischer was a key factor in Lexington improving to 5-0 in 5A Region 4 volleyball play.

The Wildcats defeated River Bluff and Irmo last week, and Fishcer affected the games in multiple ways. Lexington and River Bluff battled for first place early in the week. In that game, Fischer finished with 30 assists, five digs, two aces and a kill. Against Irmo, she had five assists and three aces.

The senior recorded her eighth game with at least 20 assists and her fourth game with multiple aces. The Wildcats are undefeated in region games and have dropped just one set in five contests. Fischer and the team will look to continue the momentum this week with three region games.
