The fall sports season is at its peak with region action happening in all sports across Lexington County.

With competitions having real playoff implications, many athletes around Lexington County have elevated their game to help their teams achieve success. This week’s Athlete of the Week winners led their teams to a much-needed first region victory.

Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchonicle.com

Brennan Carter

Lexington’s Brennan Carter led the Wildcats to a thrilling win against Chapin in region play last Friday.

The sophomore quarterback led the Wildcats to a fourth quarter comeback over the Eagles after trailing by 17 earlier in the game.  Carter put his team out front with a 22-yard pass to Nigel Lewis with less than a minute left in the game. Carter also had a long touchdown pass before halftime that sparked the comeback.

With the win, Lexington advanced to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in region play. Carter’s play in his first year as the starter has been key for Lexington in its wins.

Merryck Brackett

Dutch Fork volleyball’s Merryck Brackett helped her team earn its first region victory of the season after a big performance against White Knoll.

Brackett contributed in multiple ways, finishing the match with 10 kills, 14 digs, eight assists and four aces as the Silver Foxes won three sets to two. The senior has been consistently contributing all year, and against the Timberwolves she set a season-high in digs and recorded her second match with 10 kills.

It has been a tough season for the Silver Foxes, but players like Brackett have the potential to rally the team to wins. The Silver Foxes have four region contests left this year. The team will look for Brackett to continue her steady play as they try to finish the year on a positive note.
