Blue Granite takeover costs near $10M

Lexington improves aging sewer system

Blue Granite sewer improvements are expected to be less than $10 million.

This includes demolishing the old sewer plant on Lake Murray, Town Administrator Britt Poole said.

The town took over the system after years of customer complaints about poor service and high prices from the former Carolina Water Co., now calling itself Blue Granite.

In buying Blue Granite’s system, town officials expected it was “in extremely poor condition,” Poole said.

“Our expectations were accurate. While there have been plenty of issues with the system, they have not been unanticipated issues.”

The town expects its upgrades will allow closing the old sewer plant permanently in the next 2 years.

Is the town able to respond quickly to maintenance requests from customers outside of town who are now its responsibility?

“We have added additional crews to service this area and have been responding with similar times to our current system,” Poole said.

The old sewer plant on the lake at the end of Old Chapin Road will be demolished, he said.

A lift station will be built to pump sewage to the regional system. It will be used for that into the foreseeable future.
