Brookland-Cayce boys soccer wins 1st state title

The 4th time in the state title was indeed the charm for Brookland-Cayce.

The boys soccer team defeated Daniel 4-2 Saturday to win the Class 3A SC High School League State championship at Irmo High School.

“All playoffs long they’ve just shown resiliency and just kept pushing,” Bearcats 4th year head coach Matt Drapeau said.

He also said he knew Daniel would not quit, but “it’s not about how you start the game, it’s about how we end it.”

Brookland-Cayce’s Eduardo Moisa Membreño was the offensive star of the game. He scored the 1st goal 5 minutes into the first half to put the Bearcats up 1-0.

Membreño scored again with 25 minutes left in the 1st half to put BC up 2-0. He had 3 goals for the match and finished with 53 on the season.

With just under 12 minutes left in the first half, Brookland-Cayce’s Lawton Powers scored to make it 3-0. Daniel got on the scoreboard after a penalty kick with a score by Luis Lezama with a little more than 5 minutes left in the half.

The rest of the second half remained a defensive struggle with neither team scoring, until Membreño broke the stalemate. He scored with 2 minutes left for the “hat trick” to give the Bearcats a 2-goal cushion. This was Brookland-Cayce’s first-ever state

This was Brookland-Cayce’s first-ever state title in 4 appearances. The Bearcats finish the season with a 20-6 record, all 6 to schools in Classes 4A and 5A.
