Business goof of the week

A college apparel company has an expensive goof on its hands.

But maybe it will become such a joke people will buy hoodies bearing the word California over the University of South Carolina Gamecocks logo.

The China-based SHEIN company hoodie is unlikely to refer to former USC President Robert Caslen’s 2021 graduation speech in which he mistakenly referred to USC as the University of California.

Caslen’s mistake came before it was revealed that he plagiarized part of his speech from retired Navy Adm. William McRaven’s 2014 commencement address at the University of Texas.

After an apology, Caslen resigned.

Carolina officials are not happy.

The university has sent a cease and desist letter to SHEIN for use of the school’s trademark, spokesman Jeff Stensland said. SHEIN is popular on social media and among teens. However, the company has not been without its share of controversy.

SHEIN is a “fast fashion” distributor of cheap clothing that has been accused of stealing designs from artists.

The 95% polyester hoodie comes in extralarge sizes and light gray only on SHEIN’s website for $16.
