The Cayce Police Department is investigating a vehicle hit and run that left a Cayce man dead.

Per a press release from a city spokesperson, at approximately 6:30 p.m. Nov. 11 on the 1200 block of Frink Street, witnesses saw a vehicle strike a man walking and flee the scene in the direction of Charleston Highway. Cayce Police and EMS responded and investigators trained in accident reconstruction are collecting evidence from the scene, interviewing witnesses and reviewing video surveillance footage.

On Nov. 15, the department released video of the light-colored sedan it believes was involved the incident.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has identified the victim as John Wesley Butler, 64, of Cayce. A Facebook post from her office details that he was walking across the roadway when he was struck. He was pronounced dead at the scene due to his injuries.

On Nov. 12, the city released an update on the situation stating that a sedan, not a dark SUV as previously reported, struck Butler. The sedan will have damage to the front end center of the hood and undercarriage.

“Anyone with information that could assist the Cayce Police Department bring those responsible to justice, should call crime stoppers at 888CRIMESC,” the release states. “Your anonymous tip could result in a cash reward.”
