AROUND CAYCE, SPRINGDALE & WEST COLUMBIA

All phases of the Cayce Riverwalk from the Blossom Street Bridge all the way through Timmerman Trail are open. River-walk was closed as The Congaree River was expected to crest Feb. 25 at 18.5 feet. Because of high water, all of the Riverwalk in Cayce, including the Tim-merman Trail, had been closed. City of Cayce officials said they were thankful for the city’s parks department and all of the city’s staff that worked hard to address needed repairs and get the Riverwalk open after the high water closed it.

On Feb. 23, the area of the West Columbia Riverwalk Park from the Gervais Street Bridge to the Moffatt Street entrance was closed due to high water in that area. Once the waters subsided and the Riverwalk path was clear again, the city announced that all areas of the West Columbia Riverwalk Park were open to the public.

East Point Academy was alive with excitement throughout the month of February as students, staff and community members celebrated Chinese New Year and Black History Month. The school’s motto is, “Merging Cultures. Inspiring Minds. Expanding Horizons.” The latest event was a school-wide Black History Celebration.

Each day, the morning announcements started off with a Black History Month trivia question. Students had the opportunity to answer questions and the student with the most correct answers from each campus won a gift certificate and a Black History Month t-shirt.

T-shirts, which featured a Black History Month graphic, the East Point Logo and a quote from NASA pioneer, Katherine Johnson, were also available for purchase. Second grader Eden Smith was the elementary campus trivia winner and 7th grader Hanna Sophia Dornik won for the middle campus.
