Cayce school collects water for victims

AROUND CAYCE, SPRINGDALE & WEST COLUMBIA

Lexington School District Two Communications Director Dawn Kujawa said Cayce Elementary School wanted help those affected by Hurricane Florence and the flooding that followed on the SC coast.

As a result, the Cayce Cares Bottled Water Drive collected more than 10,000 bottles of water over two weeks. The drive ended Friday. As a part of it, Cayce Elementary partnered with Daisy Elementary in Loris, where the floods took a toll. Fresh water is still a challenge for Daisy Elementary and the families in the area, where students just returned to classes this week after several weeks out.

Part of the reason the Cayce students wanted to help is because of the help Lexington County received in 2015 after the devastating floods here. Several Lexington Two families received help at that time.

Other Lexington Two schools, like Riverbank Elementary and Busbee Creative Arts Academy, had drives within their schools to collect for Cayce. Several churches, including Trinity Baptist Church Cayce, joined in, as did Cayce American Legion Post 190, Cayce Department of Public Safety, Thompson Turner, Jumper Carter Sease and others.

“It has truly been an amazing experience,” said Cayce Elementary Principal Andrew Drozdak.

Were you detoured last Friday?  Crews from South Carolina Electric & Gas were at the intersection of Ninth Street and Sunset Boulevard,in West Columbia that afternoon.

A power line was down, along with a utility pole. West Columbia Police Department Assistant Police Chief Scott Morrison said it was the result of a single-vehicle accident. Units from the West Columbia Police Department were detouring traffic onto Ninth Street. The West Columbia Fire Department was working the site, too.
