Chamber Events and Veterans Celebrated

Our Lexington chamber hosted Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette at the November Business Over Breakfast meeting. The breakfast, catered by Eggs Up Grill’s John Aun and sponsored by Safe Credit Union, also included invocations given by Pastor Scott Crede of Northside Baptist Church. The business portion was opened by Board Chair Mike White of Splash Omnimedia. Angelle LaBorde, Chamber President/CEO continued and recognized elected officials in attendance: State Rep. Paula Calhoon, County Councilman Darrell Hudson and Town Councilman Ron Williams, aling with Byron Williams of Congressman Joe Wilson’s office.

The Chamber hosts its Jingle and Mingle on Dec. 9 and its Legislative Breakfast on Dec 16. There are always informative programs going on at the Chamber.

Veteran’s Day was recognized last week on Nov. 11. This day celebrates the service of all military veterans.

Saturday night, Post 7 American Legion Auxiliary sponsored a Veteran’s Day celebration dinner. Linda Griffith gave a warm welcome. Commander David Griffith followed with the opening ceremony including POW/MIA recognition, National Anthem, Pledge of Allegiance and Legion Preamble. Brenda Podewil, Unit 7 Chaplain, gave a blessing before the delicious catered meal from Hudson’s Catering. Miriam Lovert always graciously plays the piano for this event. Dot Tunstall told of the pocket flags, and Makayla Foster read the service to our Veterans.

So honorable was the Quilts of Valor ceremony led by Darlene Walton, Legion I District Commander. Those receiving this prestigious honor and quilt were Shelly Thompson (U.S. Navy - Desert Storm/Gulf War); David Allen (U.S. Air Force - Vietnam); Alton Bingenheimer (U.S. Air Force - Vietnam); Nicholas Gorgone (U.S. Navy - Korea); Steven Burnett (U.S. Air Force - Vietnam/ Desert Storm); John Testruth (U.S. Army -Vietnam); and John Berzins (U.S. Air Force - Vietnam/Desert Storm). We thank them for their service. June Kinzie, Unit 7 Chaplain, gave the closing prayer to a most memorable evening.

All indications are that holidays are fast approaching. Lighted and decorated trees are all up and displayed. Yards feature blowups and Santas. But don’t forget to notice the beautifu fall leaves of red and gold.

Jerry Bellune gives us a report of a holiday gift opportunity:

“Authors for Literacy plans a charity book signing 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11. Local authors will autograph their books for anyone on your birthday or holiday gift list. They make memorable and unique Christmas gifts.

The event raises money for Turning Pages adult literacy tutoring. Turning Pages teaches illiterate people to read, write and enhances their career and life skills.

The event will be at the main Lexington County Library, 5440 Augusta Rd. (U.S. 1), just east of downtown Lexington. Authors for Literacy, the Lexington County Library, Sign It Quick and the Lexington County Chronicle and The Fish Wrapper team up to raise money for Turning Pages adult literacy tutoring each year.

Authors include Pat McNeely, Tom Poland, Ralph Jarrells, MaryJo Briggs-Austin, Kathy Widener, Linda Maguire, Scott Vaughan, John Starno, Arthur Turfa, Johnny Bloodworth, Sharon Durgin, Suzanne Riley Whyte, Claudette Holliday, Alysia Kehoe, Cat Fitzgerald, Larry Timbs, Helina Schafer, Charlie Farrell, Jay Schabacker and Jerry Bellune.”

And Ann Bull reports:
