If you gave out personal Hall of Fame awards, who would be on your list? I would give one award to my ballet teacher, Donna Lewis, founding board member of the Columbia City Ballet and Carolina Ballet.

I saw her every week and some years, every day from 3rd grade to my college years. She was a drill sergeant masquerading as a ballet teacher. She was strict, tough and you worked hard, or else!

Chapin Town hall inducted two very worthy citizens into the 2019 Chapin Hall of Fame Jan 13. Fire Chief Bill Ziegler served Chapin well in his years at the fire department, especially during the Suffolk chemical spills in the 1980s. Thank you, Chief Zeigler!

Beloved Band director Jim Mills was also honored. As a former band member, I saw him every day from 5th grade to my high school senior year. Former band members came to show their love and support

SCE&G and MCEC want to know which street lights that are not working. You can call SCE&G outages by calling 1-800-251-7234 to report the number on the pole.  You can call MCEC to report a street light outage by calling 803-749-6555 and giving the address of the pole.

Since LED lights are economical and lower our carbon footprints, you might like an LED light on your property. Call your electric provider. There is no installation fee, but there will be a recurring charge on your electric bill. SCE&G charges $25 a month, and MCEC $18.50 a month.

Irmo Branch Library has announced the Palmetto Scribe Short Story Contest for grades 11 and 12. The winner will get $500. The deadline is March 8. Submit entries to kberry@lex.lib.sc.us or drop off at the reference desk at the Irmo Library.  Call 803-798-7880 for more information.

Curious about why St. Michaels Lutheran is called “the blue church?” And did you know that in 1813 service in German was held inside the church and there was also an English service at the same time outside the church? St. Michael’s fascinating history will be the topic of the Dutch Fork Historical Society’s meeting Jan 29 at 6 pm at the Chapin Library.
