Chapin/Newberry Post 193/24 and Lexington Post 4 opened the Best-of-5 series Monday in the South Carolina American Legion playoffs.

Both teams came out on the losing end in Game 1 road contests.

Lexington was shut out 3-0 by top-seed Florence Post 1 at Legion Field.

Anthony Hopkins limited Post 7 to 2 hits and struck out 9 and received all of his run support in the 2nd inning.

Aaron White allowed just 3 hits and struck out 3, but gave up 7 hits and RBI singles in the decisive inning.

If Lexington picked up a victory in Games 2 or 3, Game 4 would take place at 7:30 pm Thursday at Lexington High School.

Clayton Wilson drove in 4 RBI, including a tiebreaking 3-run homer in the bottom 6th to lift Greer to the home win.

It was 1 of 5 combined home runs in the contest.

Chapin/Newberry rallied for 2 runs in the Top 7th. It had the tying run in Bryce Medlock, who had 2 hits and an RBI triple, at 3rd base with 2 outs. Kelson Palmer, who homered earlier in the game,  grounded out to end the game.

If Chapin/Newberry picked up a victory in Games 2 or 3, Game 4 would take place at 7 pm Thursday at Newberry College.

The South Carolina American Legion championship finals will take place July 31-Aug. 2 at Segra Park in Columbia.
