Chapin’s Cline wins 1st event

Posted

Freshman Chase Cline of Chapin High School won his 1st major golf event.

He won the South Carolina Junior Golf Association’s North All-Star championship in the Boys 13-14 division at Carolina Springs this past weekend.

“I’ve been playing well this summer and it felt good to get a major win,” he said.

Cline plays football but an Achilles’ ankle injury will sideline him this year.

“I was going to be a kicker, but hurt my ankle playing summer basketball,” Cline said.

Cline won his division by 7 shots as he played with the injury. What an unusual dynamic and there could be an underlining message here.

Here are how other locals performed in the SCJGA North All-Stars.

Emily Baker of Chapin finished the tournament with a birdie on her 36th hole to win the Girls 13-18 division by 1 shot. Mia Andrade of Chapin finished 3rd in the Girls 10-12 division. Harrison James of Chapin, an 8th grader, finished 3rd in the Boys 13-14 division.

Ashton Eubanks of Lexington finished 2nd in the Boys 15-18 division.

There was another SCJGA All-Star event. The Tommy Cuthbert South All-Star Championship was conducted at Wyboo Golf Club in Manning.

Several local juniors representing the Midlands area had great finishes. In the Boys 15-18 division Eric Nord finished tied for 2nd, and Spencer Benton tied for 6th.

Coleman Ferguson and Charles Cauthen finished tied for 1st with Ferguson winning on the 4th playoff hole with a birdie on the par 3 13th hole.

In the Boys 10-12 division, Owen Atkinson finished 6th and Josh Cameron was 12th. Connor Wolfe and Zim Atkinson also both tied for 1st in the Boys 7-9 division with Wolfe winning with a birdie on the 1st playoff hole.

Kinley Brazell finished 3rd in the Girls 10-12 division. In the Girls 13-18 division, Maddie Webster finished 11th and Kaitlyn Stonehill was 12th.

Congratulations to all these players for earning their way onto the All-Stars team during the summer and their great play at the events.

The Lexington Recreation and Aging Commission Family Junior fall season registration is underway.

This program features the entire family participating in golf, learning together with parents.

Constructed to look a bit like youth T-ball, coaches pitch baseball and the introductory youth soccer programs, parents are on the field.

They can serve as “Golf Guides”, caddies, or even player-partners.

This is a brand new Grow Golf Now curriculum that offers both fundamental methods based on skill along with strategies for playing the game.

For more information, go visit www.lcrac.com, find Athletics, then click on the last paragraph of the description to find Family Junior Golf program.

And now, here’s some more advice until next week.

Staying focused and patient in tournament golf can help all players. You never know how the field is going to play on that day.
