Corona Senior Classic set

Dru Nix, girls and boys golf coach at Gilbert High School, came up with an idea that will bring some happiness to many high school seniors.

As you probably know, their season ended abruptly. ‘The Corona Senior Classic’ will take place May 11 at the Ponderosa Country Club in Batesburg-Leesville.

In addition to seniors having a final event to look forward to, there are others who can embrace the ‘Classic’

“This gives moms whose children did not have a senior season a chance to watch them play one last time,” described a smiling coach Nix. “There is not much time and we realize this is short notice, So we will accept players the day of the competition. They can just show up and play, because we don’t want to turn kids down.”

The event is a 1 pm shotgun start at the Ponderosa Country Club. The entry fee is $25. For information and registration, call Nix at (803) 446-6513 or email her at drunix50@gmail.com.

Nix was highly motivated for a couple of other reasons.

“We had five seniors this year,” she said. “These kids have worked hard for 4 years. This event also was created for the kids who will not play at the college level. Now these kids get a chance to compete 1 last time.”

In order to comply with social distancing, Nix had this to say.

“There will be no range time before the round,” she said. “There also will be no scoreboard so gathering will not take place in close proximity after the round. We will have scores available on the internet. We will play in threesomes and all of the current social distancing rules will be followed.”

The event at this time does not have a formal sponsor. Nix would love for the kids to get shirts of some kind. Please contact her if you are an interested in becoming a sponsor.

“It would be wonderful if we had someone or a group that could sponsor the event,” Nix said.

The Corona Senior Classic is an independent junior event and is not affiliated in any way with the S.C. High School League.”

This event will be something that players and their families can look forward too. Golf carts will be available for spectator rental.

Speaking on the topic of local golf, a brand new golf program was created in our community that not only makes the mothers happy, it inspires them to participate.

LCRAC NEWS

The Lexington County Recreation and Aging Commission family Golf season is still officially suspended. However, numerous families continue to play golf together on a volunteer basis. The outdoor segment of the program has continued with impressive feedback from families.

The ‘Family Friendly’ format is very simple and would look a bit like ‘T-ball’ or ‘Coaches Pitch’ with moms and dads on the playing field.

In closing, the LCRAC Family Golf Program will remain under suspension until June 1. At that point, they are optimistic of resuming the spring season.
