County honors our veterans

Many American flags waved in the wind as the 2020 Veterans Day Parade made its way down Main Street Sunday.

Patriotism was at its best as tribute was paid to all veterans.

Leading off the parade was the LHS AFROTC band followed by the Blue Star Mothers walking and distributing American flags. Grand Marshal Ken Peterson, US Army veteran, was on the Jamil Shriners Potentate float. Congressman Joe Wilson, Mayor Steve MacDougall and Town Councilman Todd Lyle waved to spectators.

The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department was well represented and Scout troops and leaders walked with pride and patriotism. Former mayor and Army vet Hugh Rogers rode in a 1941 military truck.

American Legion posts were represented. On local Post 7’s red, white and blue float were Commander David and Linda Griffith, Mary Hazelton, Doris Frye, Makala Foster, Dot Tunstall and driver, Deputy Jonathan Jeffcoat. Coroner Margaret Fisher and the always faithful camel, Abraham with owner, Clifford Fisher were there. US Naval Cadets and Queens: Jaidyn-Elise Grantham – National Miss Teen Armed Forces Honor Lillian Grantham – America’s International Miss Preteen Palmetto State Jamie Boswell – Preteen South Carolina and Jamil Shriners rounded out a successful Veterans Parade organized by dedicated Sharon Willis.

AMERICAN LEGION POST 7 plans to have its Veterans Day Dinner Nov. 14, at 6 pm. Reservations are required. No cost for Post 7 Legionnaires but it’s $8 for everyone else. To make a reservation, call Commander Griffith or Auxiliary member Linda Griffith at 803-359-1278. Masks and social distancing will be required.

The Post is open to groups for rental. Call 803-529-5695 to book your event.

EX-MAYOR HUGH ROGERS was honored with a drive-by 90th birthday celebration Friday at Mount Horeb Methodist Church. Present were his wife Maro, children Myda, Aida, Margot, Clifton and two granddaughters. Capping off the memorable day, the family enjoyed a dinner that evening as Hugh declared “90 is the new 70!” He deserves another mention as Anne Bull adds to this happy occasion:

75 or more cars plus flashing lights and siren tributes from numerous members of law enforcement honored Hugh on his birthday. His wife Maro, a fomer mayor pro tem, enjoyed seeing friends and family, too.

DAISY AND ANNIE, Ronnie and Joy Wingard’s hens, are the best dressed chicks in town. They were given red gingham chicken aprons. The Wingards will send a picture to the Chronicle as soon as they catch their im-“peck”ably dressed feathered friends.
